1. The Art of Engaging Patients: Using OARS Skills

 

Do you want to engage more effectively with patients? Do you want to learn intentional strategies to obtain the patient’s story and discover their goals/needs?


In this workshop you will learn:

  • OARS skills (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, summaries)
  • To develop open-ended questions
  • Different types of reflective listening strategies
  • Intentional practice of rapport building skills

 

 

2. Patient-Focused Visits: Collaborative Agenda Setting & Health Teaching Skills


Are you looking for effective ways to increase your patient’s involvement during your interactions with them?

In this workshop you will learn skills to:

  • Work collaboratively with patients to identify and address their needs
  • Provide health information in a patient centered manner

 


3. Discussing the Benefits of Change: Strategies to Elicit Change Talk

Are you tired of trying to convince patients to make changes?

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to ask questions that prompt patient’s to discuss their own reasons for making healthy changes
  • Strategies to assess patient’s readiness to make healthy changes

 


4. Creating a Bridge for Change: Evoking Commitment

Do you find you are going around in circles trying to obtain a patient goal?

 

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to respond to change talk with reflective listening skills
  • How to evoke commitment to change
  • Where MI becomes directional and intentional
  • Opportunity to practice Brief Action Planning skills

5. Engaging Patients Effectively: Skills for Working with Pre-Contemplators

 

Are you frustrated when you try to discuss risky behaviours with patients who do not seem to be interested in change?

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Identify different types of pre-contemplators
  • Intervene to encourage patients to start thinking about making healthy changes
  • Respond using stage-wise interventions

 


6. Understanding Resistance as Ambivalence and Rolling With It

Do you work with patients who are resistant to making healthy behaviour changes?

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Strategies to engage ambivalent patients
  • How to gently raise discrepancy between patients values and behaviours to help motivate them to make healthy changes

 


7. Motivational Interviewing and Eliciting Patient-Focused Goals (Full Day)

Do you want to learn & practice MI skills using the 4 processes as a guide to effectively work through a patient issue?

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Specific MI skills within each of the 4 processes
  • Practice skills used within each of the 4 processes of an MI interview to strategically guide your intervention to obtain a patient focused goal
